Weekly Schedule - Week of July 17 Shacharit Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 6:30am and 8:00am Monday, Thursday: 6:15am and 8:00am
Mincha/Maariv: 8:05pm except Sunday Mincha/Maariv will be 7:45pm
The Three Weeks The 17th of Tammuz initiates a period of mourning for the Jewish people known as the 3 Weeks. According to R. Joseph Soloveitchik zt”l this period mirrors the 12 month mourning over a parent.
This year 17 Tammuz falls on Shabbat and thus the fast is moved to Sunday. Fast begins 4:25AM and ends 8:58PM
This time period is characterized by 3 types of prohibitions:
1. Communal Celebrations: • A simple gathering of 2 or 3 families in a restaurant would not be considered a celebration. • A larger gathering, however, would be prohibited during this time period. • While the general example of a larger gathering is weddings, any party (even without music) would be prohibited during the 3 weeks. • Similarly included in this prohibition is music. • Generally, Halacha frowned upon all musical celebrations since the destruction of the temple. This transforms into a staunch prohibition during the three weeks, whether live or recorded. • R. Aharon Lichtenstein zt”l permits functional use of recorded music (e.g. to keep you awake while driving or to motivate you during exercise).
2. Haircuts are prohibited. • Like the 12 month mourning, shaving would be permitted for necessity and professionalism. • One may certainly shave for Shabbos
3. Shehechiyanu - one may not purchase new clothes or any new item which would require a shehechiyanu. • The Mishna Berurah allows for the recitation of Shehechiyanu on Shabbos. Therefore one may purchase an item especially for Shabbos. • A sale item which will not be available after the three weeks may be purchased, but cannot be used until after Tisha b'Av.
One may swim and wash regularly during this time.
