The Nine Days The Nine Days begin on Rosh Chodesh Av - Monday 8/5 According to R. Soloveitchik the mourning of the Nine Days mirrors Shloshim, the 30 days that follow the burial of a loved one. All prohibitions of the 3 weeks apply to the nine days. Plus, we take a much stricter stance with regard to music. The prohibitions of the Nine Days continue through midday on the day after Tisha b'Av (8/14).
Note: This year since the day after the fast is Friday the prohibitions against laundry and haircuts end already on Thursday night/Friday morning and one need not wait until midday.
1. Laundry - 2 prohibitions apply here: (1) to launder clothes. (2) wearing freshly laundered clothing • One may wash children's clothing. • One may wear laundered undergarments. • One may wear laundered clothes on Shabbos.
2. Shaving is prohibited • If there is potential loss of profit from work, one may shave.
3. One should not seek to expand business activities or build during the nine days. • Exceptions are made for davar ha-aved - monetary loss and necessity.
4. Bathing for pleasure is prohibited. It is permitted for cleanliness. Swimming for exercise would be permitted.
5. Meat and wine are prohibited • One may eat meat and drink wine on Shabbos. • If possible, Havdalah should be drunk by a child. However, if no child is available, the one reciting the blessing may drink it. • One may eat meat and drink wine on the occasion of a Bris Milah or a Siyyum.
